Food Is Medicine Coalition Applauds the Inclusion of Medically Tailored Meals in the Biden-Harris Administration National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health

FIMC Participation in the White House Conference on Hunger Nutrition and Health

For months, the Food Is Medicine Coalition (FIMC) has been participating in the information gathering process for the historic White House Conference.

  • In May, FIMC issued a set of recommendations to drive solutions to the urgent call from the White House to address the challenges of millions of Americans struggling with hunger, and diet-related diseases—like heart disease and diabetes,

  • FIMC representatives participated in every Regional Listening Session

  • Our Executive Director, Alissa Wassung was part of the Strategy Group of the Informing the White House Conference Coalition and provided input on the IWHC Task Force Report,

  • The FIMC WHC Policy Priorities were submitted directly to the Domestic Policy Council,

  • FIMC assembled the powerful collection of client stories from across the country: A Healthy Future: Stories of Resilience, multiple medically tailored meal agencies submitted local perspectives to the WHC Online Portal and many agencies held their own convenings.

FIMC was part of the in-person conference, being represented by our Chair, Karen Pearl, President & CEO of God’s Love We Deliver, who spoke on a panel, and by multiple leaders of FIMC organizations from across the country, who were in attendance: David Waters, CEO of Community Servings in MA, Sue Daugherty RDN LDN, CEO of MANNA in PA and Suzy DeYoung, Executive Director of La Soupe in OH.

Food is Medicine Coalition Announces Priorities for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health

As a nonprofit coalition of Medically Tailored Food and Nutrition Service providers from across the country, we are thrilled the White House has announced the second convening of the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health in September 2022. The first in over 50 years, the convening will bring together key stakeholders, including FIMC, to present and discuss ideas to end hunger, improve nutrition and physical activity, and reduce diet-related diseases and disparities for millions of Americans.

For decades, FIMC members have worked simultaneously to improve access to healthy and affordable foods and to improve health outcomes for people and families in communities across America affected by diet-related diseases like heart disease and diabetes, illnesses we know are leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Through this work, we have also seen firsthand the impact of these illnesses and their severity on underserved communities, including Black, Latinx, Native American, and lower-income and rural Americans.

We are proud to stand with President Biden, Vice President Harris, members of Congress, and our FIMC colleagues across the country in advocating for and implementing real solutions to address these challenges. Read about our priorities and recommendations below.
